McCoy had pointed to piles of dark-grey blankets, then grinned and told them there was no âsissified,â in-flight heating, before heading up into the cockpit.
Anton had watched as the otherâs all grabbed armfuls of blankets. Peter had nudged his elbow on the way to the pile and said, âAt least itâs not a boat.â
The aircraft had previously been a freighter. There were no seats for passengers, just a long open space with curved walls. With only six passengers in a cabin that could hold thirty, or forty at a pinch, there was plenty of room. Some minimal strip lighting had been installed on ad-hoc power lines taped to the main cabinâs ceiling, and there was just enough light not to be called, âpitch black.â
Anton picked up a thick wad of blankets and moved to the back of the plane. He wanted some space, he was still digesting the impact of Chiaraâs revelation. Where did he want to go with this? His immediate reaction had been to support her, sheâd needed it, and heâd given it, and yet - sheâd betrayed everyone.
The war between the Ramp masters and the Vampire Dominion didnât matter that much to Anton. Theyâd been waging it for five millennia, and what difference had it made? His goals were personal. Chloe Armitage had tortured and beheaded his mother before his eyes. His father had been abducted and was hidden as a vampire somewhere, suffering eternal punishment. Marcus Drake had paid the price, slain by Antonâs hand. There were only Chloe Armitage and her commander, Cornelius Crane to go. He vowed to do whatever was necessary to kill them both, only then, would justice be satisfied.
And one day heâd find his father too and end his torment. He didnât like to think about it, but the only way he could ever deal with his fatherâs situation was to kill him. It was just another terrible thing that Chloe Armitage had forced him into doing. His fatherâs death would be laid at Armitageâs feet too.
A shadow separated from the gloom, an armful of blankets held against her chest. She whispered, âItâs too cold up front, have you got some room back here.â
Anton had made a cocoon of blankets, half underneath to shield from the cold deck of the DC-3, and the rest above. He moved aside, lifting the top blankets back to create space.
A dark-haired beauty slipped in next to him, her own blankets adding to the base and the covers. She whispered into his ear, âYou donât mind how close I get?â
Anton shook his head, his arm going around her shoulders.
She pushed up close to his body, leaning into his chest, and asked, âWould you really have seen her throat ripped open?â
Antonâs mind flashed back to the nightclub and the vampire whoâd grabbed the auburn-haired Icelandic girl. âNo, not really. But, I had to convince him that I didnât care.â
âYou were bluffing?â she said quietly, her right hand moving over his chest.
âThe important thing was he believed me and threw her away.
